Controlling Varroa Mites Without Using Chemicals

I am a NC State Beekeepers Association Master Craftsman Beekeeper who lives and raises honey bees on the Southeast coast. I started keeping honey bees in 1973 as a Future Farmers of America project. Four years later when I joined the US Marine Corps, I gave my colonies to another beekeeper in the FFA and didn’t have honey bees for the next 30 years. March 2008 when I retired, I started keeping honey bees again and today I have about 40 10-frame colonies and 81 nucs for raising queens. I raise and sell Varroa Sensitive Hygienic open mated queens and am a queen breeder as well. I am the recipient of the American Beekeeping Federation 2021 Practical Beekeeping Idea Award for a pollen patty feeder that I designed. I was the recipient of the NCSBA 2023 Beekeeper of the Year. I am currently the Master Beekeeper Program Coordinator for the NCSBA.
